MODEL HISTORY

The BMW M3 generation E30 is undoubtedly an iconic car. It was created at a time, when motorsport was perceived differently by the carmakers themselves than it is today. Of course, the conditions, created by the FIA for the homologation of cars, also played a significant role in this. The so-called Group A, which was valid at the time of the creation of the first generation M3, prescribed the minimum number of units of production cars and, at the same time, determined, in which directions the racing specials must not differ from the production cars. The solution to this situation could be to modify the entire model line, but, as you know, all racing manufacturers went the way of limited series, the famous homologation specials.

Although the M3 was far from the only homologation special of its time, it was exceptional, namely the approach of the BMW itself and the BMW Motorsport department respectively. That is because they decided to, first, build the race car on the foundations of the E30 series and only then turn it into a production car. At first glance at the road version of M3, this is evident from the use of wider fenders and aerokit, the second glance registers a different C-pillar, which gives the skeleton extraordinary rigidity.

A total of seven special versions of the M3 were created and sanctified by BMW. In addition to the homologation Evo I, Evo II and Sport Evo (otherwise known as Evo III), the factory also produced limited editions that referred to certain sporting achievements of the model - Tour de Corse, Europa Meister 88, Johnny Cecotto and Roberto Ravaglia.

Production of the model began in March 1986 and ended in December 1990. During that time, over 10,000 European versions and over 5,000 American versions of the car were created. This number does not include the last homologation series Sport Evo, which was created in 600 units.
